Youth Leadership Camp (21 days)

Alpine hiking| canoeing |white water rafting | learning about local Indigenous culture | backpacking | life, social and outdoor leadership skills development

Campers are taken on a journey across some of British Columbia’s most stunning locations while learning the essentials of outdoor leadership and environmental stewardship.

Dates: July 3 to July 23, 2018
Ages: 13-17 (Co-ed)
Price: Early bird (before December 16, 2017) $3,349 CDN + 5% tax.
Regular $3,599 CDN + 5% tax.

Includes instruction, food, accommodation, most camping gear, camping fees and transportation while on trip. Does not include flight and some optional activities.

Locations: Squamish, Whistler, Vancouver, Sunshine Coast, Sechelt Inelt, and Halkett Bay Provincial Park

Core Recreational and Educational Elements: Language and cultural immersion, alpine hiking, ocean canoeing, white water rafting, connections with Indigenous culture, backpacking, focus on life and social competencies and outdoor leadership skills training.

  • Paddle along the majestic coastlines of Howe Sound and Sechelt Inlet
  • Sleep under the stars in some of BC’s best Provincial Parks and enjoy some peaceful rest in your tent
  • Experience the beauty of Whistler Village, the beaches of Vancouver, white water rafting in Squamish and the incredible sunsets of British Columbia
  • Learn the basics of front and back-country camping, ocean canoeing and orienteering, alpine hiking, and more!
  • Be supported by experienced and skilled instructors who will provide supervision for 24 hours a day for the entirety of the program
  • Participate in leadership and canoe certification
  • Learn about leadership styles and competencies of leaders
  • Partake in language and cultural exchange experiences with other youth
  • Participate in a half day community project
Additional Program Details
  • Campers are picked up by Navigo staff at Vancouver International Airport on the first day of camp and escorted to Vancouver International Airport on the last day.
  • This program takes campers to places in Canada that are not easily accessible by many – providing a truly meaningful look at Canada’s most pristine natural settings.
  • Campers are supported by highly skilled outdoor instructors
  • Campers are joined by Canadian, Indigenous and other youth campers from around the world

July 3, 2018 – Vancouver, Camp Capilano 

  • Arrivals (please connect with us directly to make alternative arrival times)
    • 9am to 2pm – Vancouver International Airport
  • Depart for Camp Capilano
  • Equipment and bag check
  • Welcome ceremony and dinner
  • Leadership Discussion Question: What is leadership? Who are your leaders? What are the characteristics of a leader? Why is leadership important to self and others? Review of leadership bracelet process (evening)
  • Evening night hike with instructors with Lynn Canyon Park
  • Snacks available for late arrivals

July 4, 2018 – Vancouver, Camp Capilano

  • Morning wake up – stretch and morning hike (breakfast in the forest)
  • Overview of 21-day leadership expedition
  • Overview of program goals and objectives, review safety and emergency procedures and full value agreement
  • Tour of English Bay, Stanely Park and downtown Vancouver
  • Evening session: Animal Aware – what to do when you see an animal such as bears, cougars and raccoons (evening discussion)
  • Review meal preparations & cooking 101 activity (learning to cook with camp stove and over a fire)
  • Purchase items youth may have missed
  • Sunset ceremony

July 5, 2018 – Sechelt Inlet, Poppoise Bay Provincial Park

  • Early morning wake up
  • Pack up personal and group gear and food for Sechelt Inlet expedition
  • Afternoon departure from Horseshoe Bay to the Sunshine Coast and head to Sechelt
  • Last minute purchases before expedition
  • Set up camp at Porpoise Bay Provincial Park
  • Evening ocean canoe practice

July 6-11, 2018 – Sechelt Inlet

  • Sechelt Inelt ocean canoeing expedition, visiting incredible locatin and camping along the seashore and under the stars
  • Trip preparation basics – how to keep yourself warm, cool, dry and your gear waterproof, rolling sleeping bagshow to travel lightly, food preparation
  • Review canoe equipment
  • Focus on ocean canoe paddling and outdoor skills
  • Return to Porpoise Bay Provincial Park for showers, buffet dinner and laundry

July 12-19, 2018 – Gambier Island, Howe Sound

  • 6-day circumnavigation of Gambier ISland with teh chance to see orca whales and witness one of BC’s most treaured natural areas
  • Set up camp around remote areas of Gambier Island
  • Practicing ocean canoeing and reviewing safety procedures
  • Review of navigation charts and orientation
  • Water purification lesson
  • Discussion: 5 pillars and 5 values of leadership
  • Solo experience at Halkett Bay
  • Community service project (half day)

July 19, 2018 – Whistler, Fireside Lodge

  • Full day white water rafting in Squamish
  • Exploring town of Squamish (approximatley 45 minutes from Whislter)
  • Settle into Fireside Lodge
  • Relax, suana and movie night

July 20, 2018 – Whistler, Fireside Lodge

  • Full day exploring Whistler
  • Participants have the opportunity to participate in specialized Whistler activities (own expense)
  • Pizza night

July 21, 2018 – Whistler, Fireside Lodge

  • Up early
  • Hike Rainbow Lake Trail
  • Swim at Alta Lake
  • Evening in Whistler Village

July 22, 2018 – Whistler, Fireside Lodge

  • Up early and all participants will partake in a mini marathon challenge
  • Group debrief
  • Video journal closing remarks
  • Graduation BBQ dinner

July 23, 2018 – Homeward Bound

  • Up early and departure for Vancouver and airport
